Lake Superior Sunset Timelapse

By | Quick Outdoor Fixes, Trips | No Comments

Recently, my wife and I took a trip up to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for a week to celebrate our 15th anniversary. So in the coming weeks, be on the lookout for videos from this amazing experience.

In this video, my wife and I took an excursion to the beach at Au Train Bay to catch one of Lake Superior’s famous sunsets. I decided to take along my GoPro Hero 4 to try out the time-lapse feature. I’ve never shot a time-lapse video before, so I would love for some feedback from any of you with experience with it.

Charlestown State Park

Charlestown State Park Day Hike

By | Camp and Hike, Trips | No Comments

In this video I take you along with me on a rainy day hike in Charlestown State Park in Charlestown, Indiana. This park sits right on the Ohio River, and is very rich in history. For this hike, I hiked trails 3 and 7 which led me down to the banks of the Ohio River. This is a very well-marked, and mostly paved hike. This trail took me down to the historic Rose Island, which was sort of an amusement park in the early 20th century. There were still many remnants of the park left to enjoy which you will see in the video.

Before going any further though, I do want to apologize because I kept pronouncing this place as “CharlesTON” instead of “CharlesTOWN”. My bad :-)

One thing that was nice about this particular hike, is that because it was rainy and in late November, I had the trail all to myself. Along the trail were many signs, and interactive kiosks that told the history of the park, which was nice too.

Here are a couple of links you may find helpful if you are ever decide to check out the area:

Harrods Creek

Harrods Creek – Louisville, Kentucky

By | Kayaking, Trips | No Comments

In this video I take you along as I kayak Harrods Creek near Louisville, Kentucky. The creek is actually in Prospect Kentucky, but it is in the greater Louisville metro area. This “creek” is a tributary of the Ohio River. I say “creek” because it probably averages about 75′ across in most places. But there is very little current to it. On this stretch or river you can expect to see deer, turkey, turtles, cranes, and possibly even a bald eagle.

The livery I rented from was Nachand Canoe and Kayak Rental: http://www.nachandkayaks.com/

This is a family-owned business, and attached to the business is a sports bar/restaurant called, Darkstar Restaurant or Darkstar Tavern.

$30 got me 4 hours with this beautiful river. One of the nice things about it is that because there is very little current, I was able to paddle up the creek for a couple of hours, turn around and head right back to my car. The livery is also conjoined with a bar and grill, so if you are hungry when you get back, there are food options.

You’re Invited! Fall Colors Day Hike

By | Camp and Hike, Trips | No Comments

Distressed-Text-Effect-Mockup

Join me and others from the Michigan Hiking and Backpacking Facebook Group for a day-hike on the North Country Trail through the Lost Nation State Game Area in Pittsford, Michigan.

This day hike will take you along 7(ish) miles of the North Country trail during a time of year traditionally ablaze with the colors of fall.

It’s all happening on Saturday, October 24th at 9am.

No huge agenda other than just enjoying creation together with a bunch of fellow trail junkies. You might just meet some kindred spirits :-)

We will meet up at 9am in the Family Dollar parking lot in Pittsford, Michigan. From there we will drive to the starting parking area, then send some of our vehicles to the end parking area. After the hike, if several of us would be willing to take people back to the start for their cars, I would greatly appreciate it. I may have a 15 passenger van available as well to shuttle folks if we need it. The Family Dollar was just built this past month, so it is not on any maps. If you need directions, it’s on the corner of M-34 (Hudson Rd.) and Pittsford Rd in Pittsford, Michigan. This is such a small town so if you can get to it, you can’t miss the store.

Please bring items you would imagine needing for a normal day hike in the fall including water, food, jacket, hat, camera, good shoes/socks, rain gear etc. If the chance of precipitation is anything greater than 40% in Pittsford, Michigan on the day of the hike we will cancel. It’s no fun hiking in 40-50 degree weather when it’s raining out! :-)

I would rate this trail as moderate in difficulty due to several stream crossings, and a bit of steep/sometimes muddy terrain in parts, so be advised if you are new to hiking.

If you would like to camp here the night before, please follow this link for information on dispersed camping on Michigan State land (http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10365_10883-31303–,00.html) It’s free, but there are some things you need to know/do. Please, please, please practice LNT while here.

If you have any questions about this get-together, just hit me up, and if you plant to come, please let me know via the Facebook event. :-)

See you outdoors (literally this time :-)
